Multisensory Language Tutoring

Learning to read, write, and spell come very easily for many children. There is a natural desire for children to develop spoken language as well as to understand the printed word. Unfortunately, for a significant number of children, learning to read, spell, and write does not come naturally despite normal intelligence, effective classroom instruction, and a desire to learn. These difficulties can lead to problems in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and general knowledge gained by reading. When taught by traditional teaching methods, these children often face frustration and failure, but with specialized and individualized instruction, students can develop skills and strategies to achieve success through the development of life-long language skills.

Our goal is to provide one-to-one instruction, which will enable students to develop effective reading, spelling, and writing skills. Phonic Fundamentals, which forms the foundation for our teaching, is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching language arts skills, and includes:

  • Multi-sensory teaching and reinforcement throughout every lesson;
  • Phonics, language structure, and spelling rules are directly taught;
  • Instruction emphasizes phonological awareness;
  • Teaching is explicit, sequential, and cumulative.

The number of hours of tutoring varies according to the severity of each student’s difficulties, their intelligence, emotional make-up, the support received from family and teachers, and the age at which the problem is identified. Often time students need tutoring for an average of 2 – 3 years.
